Regional & Local Food Connections

Many of our members and visitors have already committed themselves to eating locally produced foods whenever possible. The following resources will help you put locally produced food from local growers and specialty food producers on your next menu.

General

The Organic Consumers Association has an interesting collection of articles, position papers, and links for the more activist among us.  Check out Breaking the Chain at http://www.organicconsumers.org

The Sustainable Table has great general resources for locavores. Check them out at http://www.sustainabletable.org

A study sponsored by the University of New Hampshire in 2003 examined the challenges for sustainable agriculture and small farms in New England. The pdf file can be found at http://www.sustainableunh.edu

Southern New England

Connecticut

  • Nate’s Naturals
    Based in New Haven CT, this husband and wife team have created a business making natural granola using as many local products as possible from Connecticut.  Recommended by our friend and member Marcia Kindlmann, who makes beautiful pottery in Guilford CT.
  • Connecticut Grown is the site sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture. This site maintains a great up to date listing of farmer’s markets throughout the state as well as extensive resources for both agricultural and consumer interests.

Berkshire Grown offers a fun mapping feature called “map-o-licious” that will help you locate local food sources in the Berkshires based on your zip code or address. http://www.berkshiregrown.com

Community Involvement in Sustainable Agriculture focuses on Western MA farms to food resources. They can be accessed through the following link: http://www.buylocalfood.com

The Essex County and Merrimack Valley Guide to Farms and Locally Grown Food North of Boston offers good search features and a number of resources at:http://www.buyfresh.org

Vermont

Vermont Fresh offers information about Vermont local food resources. Their link is http://www.vermontfresh.net

Maine
